Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a significant milestone for Nigeria in continental football administration.
The appointment was confirmed on March 29, 2026, during a CAF Congress held in Cairo, following the resignation of outgoing Secretary General Véron Mosengo-Omba.
First Nigerian in the Role
Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to hold the position of Secretary General at CAF, a development widely seen as a boost for Nigeria’s representation within African football governance.
CAF, established in 1957, is the governing body responsible for organising major continental competitions and overseeing football development across Africa.
Experience in CAF Leadership
Before his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organising major competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His elevation reflects recognition of his administrative experience and contributions to the organisation’s operations.
Appointment Process
According to CAF procedures, his appointment was proposed by the Executive Committee and ratified by the Congress, indicating broad support among member associations.
As Acting Secretary General, Adamu will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration of CAF and implementing decisions made by its leadership.
Boost for Nigeria’s Football Influence
The appointment is seen by analysts as strengthening Nigeria’s influence within African football administration, particularly at a time when governance and organisational reforms remain key issues in the sport.
Adamu is expected to play a central role in CAF’s operations as the organisation continues to manage competitions and development programmes across the continent.
