Former Edo State Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole has expressed support for imposing the death penalty on individuals convicted of kidnapping and banditry, arguing that stronger legal sanctions are needed to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

Speaking on the country’s security situation, Oshiomhole said harsher punishments could serve as a deterrent to violent crimes that have continued to threaten lives, disrupt communities, and undermine public confidence in law enforcement.

The senator maintained that kidnapping and banditry have become major national security concerns, with many families and communities suffering the consequences of persistent attacks. He argued that decisive legal measures are necessary to discourage criminal activities and strengthen the fight against insecurity.

According to Oshiomhole, addressing the menace requires a combination of effective law enforcement, efficient prosecution of offenders, and policies capable of deterring individuals from engaging in violent crimes.

His remarks add to the ongoing national debate over the most effective approaches to tackling kidnapping, banditry, and other forms of violent crime. While some stakeholders advocate tougher penalties, others emphasize broader security reforms, improved intelligence gathering, and enhanced judicial processes.

The former governor also stressed the need for government at all levels to intensify efforts to protect citizens and restore confidence in the country’s security architecture.

Nigeria has continued to face security challenges in several regions, prompting calls for stronger strategies to combat criminal networks and improve public safety.

Oshiomhole’s comments reflect growing concern among political leaders over the need for effective measures to curb violent crimes and ensure justice for victims affected by insecurity.
