Several senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have surrendered to Nigerian security forces following sustained military operations targeting insurgent strongholds in the North-East.

The reported defections come amid intensified counterterrorism campaigns designed to disrupt the group’s operational capabilities and dismantle its support networks. Military pressure has reportedly forced more insurgents to abandon their camps and surrender to authorities.

Security officials view the surrender of high-ranking ISWAP members as a notable development in the ongoing fight against insurgency. The defections are expected to provide valuable intelligence that could support future operations against remaining terrorist elements.

The military has continued to combine offensive operations with efforts aimed at encouraging insurgents willing to renounce violence to surrender peacefully. Authorities have repeatedly called on remaining fighters to lay down their arms and participate in established deradicalization and reintegration programmes where applicable.

Counterterrorism operations remain active across affected areas, with security forces maintaining pressure on insurgent hideouts while working to improve safety for communities impacted by years of conflict.

The latest surrenders underscore the military’s continued efforts to weaken terrorist organizations through sustained operations targeting both combatants and their logistical infrastructure.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in the North-East, stressing that operations against insurgent groups will continue until the threat is significantly reduced.

Investigations and security screenings of the surrendered individuals are expected to continue as part of established procedures while military operations remain ongoing across the region.
