President Bola Tinubu has officially commissioned a lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to expand its solid minerals sector and promote value-added mineral processing.

The facility is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global lithium value chain by processing locally sourced lithium rather than exporting raw minerals. The project aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy to attract investment, create jobs, and boost industrial development through the beneficiation of the country’s mineral resources.

Speaking at the commissioning, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of developing Nigeria’s solid minerals industry as a key pillar of economic diversification. He noted that investments in mineral processing will enhance local manufacturing capacity, increase export value, and reduce dependence on crude oil revenues.

The lithium plant is also expected to contribute to the growing global demand for battery materials used in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage systems, and other advanced technologies. Stakeholders believe the project will stimulate economic activities in Nasarawa State while creating employment opportunities for local communities.

Government officials described the commissioning as a demonstration of Nigeria’s commitment to responsible mineral development and sustainable industrial growth. They expressed optimism that similar investments would encourage greater private sector participation in the mining industry.

The unveiling of the facility reinforces ongoing efforts to transform Nigeria’s mineral wealth into long-term economic value through local processing, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
