In a distressing development from Cross River State, a village head has revealed that about 200 families have been forced to flee their homes due to a recent military operation. Speaking from his temporary hideout, the traditional ruler lamented the disruption and displacement caused by soldiers conducting security exercises in the area.

The village, located in a remote part of Cross River, has been a peaceful community until the sudden military incursion. According to the village head, the soldiers entered the community early in the week, triggering panic among residents who scrambled to escape the perceived danger. Many families have sought refuge in nearby forests and makeshift camps, fearing further military action.

Displacement and Community Impact
The mass exodus has left many homes deserted, with villagers abandoning farmlands, businesses, and essential daily activities. The village head expressed deep worry over the welfare of his people, many of whom are now exposed to the elements without adequate shelter, food, or medical care. He further stressed that women and children are particularly vulnerable in these harsh conditions.

While the military’s presence is tied to counter-insurgency efforts, the traditional leader appealed for a more humane approach that balances security concerns with the livelihoods and safety of innocent civilians. “We understand the need for security, but not at the cost of our people’s lives and homes,” he said.

Call for Government Intervention
Local leaders and human rights advocates have urged the state government and relevant authorities to intervene swiftly. They are demanding that displaced families receive immediate humanitarian assistance and that efforts be made to restore peace and normalcy in the village. There is also a call for open dialogue between military personnel and community representatives to prevent future crises.

Cross River State authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the situation, but insiders suggest that talks are underway to assess the extent of the displacement and plan relief efforts. Meanwhile, the displaced villagers remain in limbo, hoping for quick action to allow their safe return.

This incident highlights the growing tension between security forces and rural communities in Nigeria’s border areas, emphasizing the need for strategies that protect citizens while ensuring effective military operations.
