A federal lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State, Busayo Oluwole Oke, has awarded scholarships to 1,240 students as part of an education support initiative aimed at promoting technical and vocational training.
The scholarship programme supports students enrolled in Government Technical Colleges across Osun State, covering costs such as school fees, enrolment charges and other academic expenses.
Supporting Technical Education
Oke said the initiative was designed to address youth unemployment and encourage practical skills development among young people.
According to the lawmaker, technical and vocational education plays a key role in preparing students for self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
The programme, which began as a pilot project at the Government Technical College in Ijebu-Jesa, has expanded across several technical colleges in the state.
Expanding Access to Education
Reports indicate that the scholarship scheme has continued to grow, with new beneficiaries added regularly to the programme.
The lawmaker is said to commit about ₦15 million per academic term, amounting to roughly ₦40 million per academic session, to sustain the initiative and support students’ educational needs.
Education stakeholders in the state have noted that the intervention has helped boost enrolment and participation in technical colleges.
Focus on Youth Empowerment
Oke described the programme as part of a broader effort to empower young people with practical skills that can help them secure employment or start businesses.
He urged beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make good use of the opportunity provided through the scholarship programme.
The initiative has been cited as an example of community-focused interventions aimed at strengthening education and skills development in Nigeria.
