Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has acknowledged that flooding will remain a recurring challenge in the state, despite ongoing efforts by the government to reduce its impact through infrastructure and environmental projects.
Speaking on the issue, the governor explained that Lagos’ coastal geography, rapid urbanisation, and the effects of climate change make it impossible to eliminate flooding entirely. He noted that while government interventions can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of flooding, some level of flooding is inevitable.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the state government’s continued investment in drainage expansion, flood control infrastructure, and environmental management initiatives aimed at improving water flow and minimising the impact of heavy rainfall on communities.
He also urged residents to support the government’s efforts by avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal, which often blocks drainage channels and worsens flooding during the rainy season.
The governor’s remarks underscore the complex environmental challenges facing Lagos and reinforce the need for sustained investment in infrastructure, effective urban planning, and public cooperation to improve the city’s resilience against flooding.
