The Federal Government has indicated that it will seek compensation over the repatriation of Nigerian citizens from South Africa, according to a government envoy.
The envoy said the government is considering diplomatic and legal avenues to address the circumstances surrounding the return of the affected Nigerians. He explained that the move reflects Nigeria’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad.
According to the envoy, the government intends to engage South African authorities through established diplomatic channels to examine the events that led to the repatriation and determine whether compensation or other forms of redress are appropriate.
The development comes amid continued concerns over the treatment of Nigerians living and working in South Africa, particularly in relation to incidents linked to xenophobia and the safety of foreign nationals.
Nigerian officials reiterated that the country expects its citizens to be treated fairly and in accordance with international law, regardless of where they reside. They emphasized that the government will continue to monitor developments affecting Nigerians overseas and intervene whenever necessary to safeguard their rights.
The envoy also stressed the importance of maintaining the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, while calling for constructive dialogue to resolve issues affecting citizens of both countries.
The Federal Government maintained that protecting Nigerians abroad remains a key priority and pledged to continue working with relevant authorities to ensure the safety, dignity, and lawful treatment of its nationals.
Further discussions between Nigerian and South African officials are expected as both countries seek to address the issues surrounding the repatriation and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
