The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported an increase in confirmed cases of Lassa fever across the country, with the cumulative death toll rising to 221.
According to the agency, the latest figures indicate that the viral disease remains a significant public health concern, prompting intensified surveillance and response efforts in affected states. The NCDC continues to monitor the outbreak closely while working with state health authorities to contain its spread.
The agency has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant by maintaining good hygiene, improving environmental sanitation, and taking steps to prevent exposure to rodents, which are the primary carriers of the Lassa fever virus. It also advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, weakness, sore throat, or unexplained bleeding to seek prompt medical attention.
The NCDC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening disease surveillance, supporting healthcare facilities, and raising public awareness to reduce infections and improve early detection and treatment.
Health officials have called for continued cooperation from communities, healthcare workers, and government agencies to curb the spread of the disease and protect vulnerable populations.
