Aston Villa’s squad planning for the 2026/27 season has received a major boost following the club’s reported move to sign Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, hijacking Newcastle United’s pursuit of the highly rated 20-year-old.
The reported signing addresses a key area of concern for manager Unai Emery after Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving Villa in need of additional quality and depth in midfield. Manzambi’s performances for Freiburg and Switzerland have established him as one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
If the deal is completed, Villa could field a formidable starting XI for the new campaign. Emiliano Martínez is expected to remain first choice in goal, protected by a defence featuring Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, and Lucas Digne.
In midfield, Boubacar Kamara would provide defensive stability alongside Manzambi, whose creativity and energy could complement Villa’s tactical approach. Morgan Rogers and Jacob Ramsey are likely to occupy advanced midfield roles, supporting the attack with their versatility and technical ability.
Up front, Ollie Watkins is expected to continue leading the line, while Leon Bailey provides pace and width from the flanks. The addition of Manzambi would offer Emery greater tactical flexibility as Villa prepare for another demanding campaign in domestic and European competitions.
Although Aston Villa have not yet officially announced the transfer, reports indicate that the club are close to finalising an agreement after overtaking Newcastle in the race for the Switzerland international.
