An Enugu State High Court has convicted and sentenced a self-acclaimed prophet for defrauding unsuspecting victims of N136.4 million through fraudulent schemes carried out under the guise of religious ministry.

The court found the defendant guilty after considering evidence presented during the trial, which showed that he used false prophetic claims and promises of spiritual intervention to deceive victims into parting with large sums of money. The fraudulent activities reportedly spanned multiple transactions and affected several individuals.

According to prosecutors, the convict exploited the trust and faith of his victims by presenting himself as a genuine religious leader while obtaining money through false pretences. Investigations by law enforcement agencies uncovered the fraudulent scheme, leading to his arrest and prosecution.

In delivering judgment, the court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and imposed a custodial sentence on the defendant. The court also reaffirmed that religious status or claims of spiritual authority cannot be used as a shield against criminal accountability.

The conviction underscores the judiciary’s commitment to combating financial crimes and protecting members of the public from fraudulent individuals who exploit religion for personal enrichment. It also serves as a warning to those who use faith-based manipulation to defraud vulnerable people.

Authorities have encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant, verify the credibility of individuals soliciting funds in the name of religion, and promptly report suspected fraudulent activities to law enforcement agencies.
