La Liga president Javier Tebas has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign, accusing the world football governing body of making decisions that are damaging the global football industry.
Speaking in an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tebas argued that Infantino’s leadership has prioritized the expansion of international competitions at the expense of domestic leagues and clubs, which he described as the foundation of world football.
The La Liga chief criticized FIFA’s continued expansion of the World Cup, including proposals to increase the 2030 tournament to 64 teams. According to Tebas, the growing international calendar is creating fixture congestion, placing excessive demands on players, and threatening the long-term sustainability of domestic competitions.
Tebas also questioned FIFA’s governance and decision-making, citing the controversial reversal of a suspension involving United States forward Folarin Balogun as an example of what he believes are broader institutional problems. He claimed such incidents have undermined confidence in FIFA’s independence and transparency.
“In my opinion, yes, I think his time is up,” Tebas said when asked whether Infantino should step down. However, he acknowledged that the FIFA president continues to enjoy strong backing from national football associations, making any leadership challenge unlikely in the near future.
Infantino has not publicly responded to Tebas’ latest remarks. The FIFA president has previously indicated his intention to seek another term in office when elections are held in 2027.
