A small aircraft crashed into Beijing’s tallest skyscraper, the CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, on Friday, prompting a large-scale emergency response and the evacuation of the landmark building in China’s central business district.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud impact before seeing debris and shattered glass fall from the upper section of the 109-storey skyscraper. Emergency services, including firefighters, police officers, and ambulances, were quickly deployed to the scene as authorities cordoned off surrounding roads and restricted access to the area. Reports indicate that the aircraft was a light plane, though officials have yet to confirm its exact model or the circumstances that led to the collision.

Images and videos circulating online showed visible damage to the building’s glass façade, while onlookers described a rapid evacuation of occupants from the tower. Authorities have not released official information regarding casualties, injuries, or the condition of the pilot, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The CITIC Tower, which rises approximately 528 metres (1,732 feet), is the tallest building in Beijing and serves as a prominent landmark in the city’s financial district. The incident has drawn particular attention because Beijing maintains some of the world’s strictest airspace controls, making aircraft accidents in the capital exceptionally rare.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing significant emergency activity around the building shortly after the crash, with fire engines, police vehicles, and medical teams arriving within minutes. Authorities sealed off nearby streets to facilitate rescue operations and ensure public safety while investigations commenced.

Officials have not yet determined whether the crash resulted from mechanical failure, pilot error, or another cause. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s flight history, maintenance records, and available evidence as part of the inquiry.

The incident has generated widespread international attention, with aviation experts noting the unusual nature of an aircraft striking a skyscraper in one of the world’s most tightly regulated urban airspaces. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as emergency operations continue and investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
